It's the Napa wine auction, the annual event that raises millions for charity and offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at what happens when the people who make fabulously priced wines gather with the people who can afford to drink them.

Area wineries sponsor map to point the way
Led by Herzog Wine Cellars in Oxnard, local wineries have designed a map that highlights their locations and area restaurants, hotels and shuttle companies. It will be available at the participating wineries, visitor bureaus, hotels and restaurants in the county. The map was created for tourists, but it also serves to educate area residents about the wine industry in their backyard that they may not have realized existed.

June 26: "Sex and the City"-inspired martini tasting, 6:30 p.m. at J's Tapas in downtown Ventura.

June 28: Santa Barbara Wine Festival pairs Central Coast wines to foods prepared by area bakers, caterers and chefs, 2 to 5 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

July 2: Wednesday Night Wine Down includes live music on the Herzog Wine Cellars terrace in Oxnard.

Late cold snap puts a chill on California vineyards
April was a cruel month for California winemakers, bringing a series of unusually late frosts to vineyards bearing the tender, green shoots of spring. The damage was still being assessed, but most vintners expected smaller-than-average harvests this year.

2005 Amista Morningsong Vineyards Chardonnay, Dry Creek Valley, 91 points from Wine Enthusiast. The review stated it "Strikes a nice balance between heavily oaked and unoaked chards by being aged in older, neutral oak. As a result, the inherently fine quality of the wine shows through with just a touch of smoke and wood."
